Forward Deployed Engineer: the hottest job in AI is not new
What a Forward Deployed Engineer actually does, why AI companies are hiring them, and which engineering skills make the role a real career opportunity.
A job title is spreading across the AI industry: Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE.
OpenAI, Palantir, Anthropic, and a growing number of startups are hiring them. Andreessen Horowitz calls it one of the hottest jobs in startups.
So what does an FDE actually do?
Engineering at the point of contact
A Forward Deployed Engineer works directly with customers. They learn the customer's workflows, connect messy systems, and build software that works in production.
The role sits somewhere between:
- software engineer
- solutions architect
- product manager
- technical consultant
Does that sound familiar? It should.
Consulting firms have employed technical people to solve customer problems for decades. Palantir gave this work a more compelling name and made it central to how the company develops its products.
More than consulting, when the model works
Calling FDE "just consulting" is close, but it misses one important difference.
A traditional consultant might deliver what one client requested. A strong FDE also brings what they learned back into the product. The solution created for one customer becomes a reusable capability for the next hundred.

That feedback loop is the real promise of forward deployed engineering.
If every engagement produces another bespoke integration that must be maintained forever, the company has not invented a new engineering model. It has built a professional services business with a fashionable title.
Why the role is growing now
AI companies are discovering that impressive demos are easy. Making AI work with real data, legacy systems, security constraints, and unpredictable users is much harder.
They need engineers who can enter an ambiguous environment, ask useful questions, and take responsibility for the result.
That requires much more than prompting.
You need to understand software architecture, APIs, databases, testing, security, and deployment. You need to write production code, communicate with nontechnical stakeholders, and make sensible tradeoffs under pressure.
AI has not made engineering fundamentals obsolete. It has made engineers who can apply those fundamentals inside a business even more valuable.
A career path for technical generalists
If you enjoy building software but do not want to spend your entire career disconnected from customers, this may be a strong next move.
Search for roles such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, Solutions Engineer, and Deployment Engineer. Titles vary, so read the responsibilities carefully.
Look for three signals:
- You will write and own production code.
- You will work directly with users and customer teams.
- Your field experience will influence a reusable product.
The title may be new. The valuable skills are not.
